Be Careful What You Wish For
A solo exhibition of new works from
Melody Jean Moulton
May 13 to June 13, 2021
Melody Jean Moulton is a self-taught, collage artist from California. She was born and raised in Humboldt County but has called San Diego home since 2002. All of her work is cut by hand - primitive cut and paste. The pandemic has brought on some major life changes and she is now the owner, employee-of-the-month, and lead janitor at Trash Lamb Gallery, a small art gallery and unconventionally curated gift shop in the South Park neighborhood of the city. This exhibition is her first-ever solo showing of a collection of her work, following her involvement in multiple juried group exhibitions at galleries such as La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles, Ghost Gallery in Seattle, Shockboxx Gallery in Hermosa Beach, and Baton Rouge Gallery in Louisiana (curated by Thinkspace, Los Angeles).
“I started creating this body of work in April of 2020, shortly after losing my bartending job when the pandemic first hit. At that time I had no idea that I would be opening an art gallery in a few months and similar to most people, was faced with a multitude of unknowns. Before the shutdown, I had often wished for more time to focus on my work. The onslaught of free time brought on by the pandemic felt like a cosmic joke - some kind of universal genie was out there granting my wish but forgot to mention the small price of a global pandemic to pay to make it happen. The collage portion of these pieces was mostly finished in those first few months of lockdown and then put aside as Trash Lamb Gallery came into fruition. Fast forward to April 2021 and pushing myself to finish, frame, and fine-tune the collection. Adding 3D aspects in the shadowbox frames was a new process for me that proved to be monumentally satisfying and I’m looking forward to more of it as my creative process continues to grow.”
