Bleeding Style
A solo exhibition of new works from
Jackie Dunn Smith
August 12 to September 19, 2021
Jackie Dunn Smith is a California artist and tattooer. Though never formally trained as a painter, they credit years of painting watercolor tattoo flash as the foundation of their painting ability. While the straightforward nature of their painting style has its roots in vintage tattoo imagery, it is the nod to everyday pathos, midcentury illustration, mythology, and rococo imagery (no subject, whether real or imagined, is spared a good amount of rouge) that defines it. Jackie currently lives in Dallas, TX with furniture builder DH Phillips and their two children.
“As a child, there were three books in my home that had a real tight grip on me: Prelude to War by TIME/LIFE books (every good baby boomer had a copy, as they had all missed WWII by mere seconds, and the book was passed out like candy to entice future purchases), The Vogue 1990 Fall Fashion Special, and an illustrated collection of Hans Christian Anderson short stories. It would be unkind of me suggest that the gouache paintings and woodcuts you see are anything other then a small fraction of how these connect in my mind, to this day, a swirling mess of emotion, charm, tragedy, power, style, and, of course, the devastation of war- the scope of which one can never truly grasp, until one is directly involved.”
